Dr. Marilyn Wyman, Instructor in Art History and American Studies, received
her Ph.D. in 1982 from the University of Southern California. Her areas
of interest include American, Modern, and African Art as well as studies
in American culture. Since 1989, she has worked extensively in South Africa.
Dr. Wyman's recent papers and publicatons include: "The Harlem Renaissance and the Affirmation of Identity" (1989); "The Lay of the Land: A Comparison of 19th Century Landscape Tradition in the United States and South Africa" (1990); "The Deracinated Worker in California Depression Murals" (1995); "Mechanisms of Power: Native American and Zulu Imagery in Popular Culture" (1995); "African American Ties in the Development of Urban Black Culture in South Africa" (1996).
She is currently working on the role of "other" in the paintings
of South African women artists and will be on leave in Spring 1997 to
pursue this work in South Africa. Dr. Wyman holds membership in the College
Art Association, Women's Caucus for the Arts, American Studies Association,
F.A.T.E. and the South African Art History Association.
